Over the next few weeks, every American household will be asked to complete a 2010 US Census questionaire. If you do not complete and mail back the Census questionaire, you will be visited by a Census "enumerator", who will demand the answers to those questions. Back in April/May of last year, I worked for the US Census Bureau compiling current, accurate address information for housing units. As part of that effort, we used a hand-held GPS device to log the GPS coordinates for every housing unit we visited. Something bothered me about this; and something bothered me about the fact that we could communicate with the Census Bureau "supervisors" only by texting through the GPS device; and something bothered me about the fact that there was never any "paper trail" of communications by or to the Census Bureau, even regarding our employment; and something bothered me about the fact that the Census Bureau demanded back every bit of paper given to us, every manual, every unused copy of public notices, every last thing; and something REALLY bothered me about the fact that President Obama had seized the entire 2010 Census program out of the US Department of Commerce and put it under direct White House control.
