I recently received an email about the amazing and deeply moving 9/11 memorial erected on the Hudson River in Bayonne, New Jersey, way back in 2006 by the Russian people and government.
I was perplexed that I had never heard about this heart-felt and magnanimous gift from the Russian people to our country. As a piece of sculpture, it is very moving and thought-provoking. Its gigantic tear is an elegant expression of sympathy and support; it stands over 100 feet tall; and the name of every victim of 9/11 is inscribed on the base.
Meanwhile, construction of our own 9/11 memorial has been mired in political controversy and bureaucracy for seven years. One wonders why this timely and sincere Russian memorial to our national tragedy seems to have gone largely unnoticed and unacknowledged…
Many belated and sincere thanks to our distant "cousins" in Russia.
